What’s the fastest way to succeed at being happy now?
Make a list of what you are grateful for. Read your list and try to get the feeling of gratitude as soon as you wake up every morning and in the evening right before you go to bed. If you only do this once a day, do it in the morning.
I actually made a recording of what I’m grateful for and instead of a loud, obnoxious alarm clock that startles me out of my sleep, I’m gently awakened with the cassette tape that plays my voice reminding me of what I’m grateful for. It’s a great way to begin your day. Rather than focusing on what you don’t have, this helps you focus on, and be thankful for, what you do have.
Here’s something else you can do right now. Imagine that you’re on a business trip alone, in another country. As far as you know, everything is okay back home with your family.
When your plane arrives nine hours later, you notice on the television, as you’re walking through the airport, that there was a fire in what looks like your neighborhood. You stop to watch and notice what looks like your house being burned to the ground.
Your cell phone battery is dead, so you begin frantically looking for a public telephone. Notice how you’re feeling right now. What are you thinking about?
You finally get in touch with your significant other who tells you that everyone is okay. The house and everything in it was totally destroyed, but everyone survived, even the dog and the cat.
Now how do you feel about the situation? Think about it for a moment. Most people could care less about the house and would feel eternally grateful that everyone was alive and okay. Things can be replaced; your loved ones can’t.
This is the feeling you need to remember when small things, insignificant things, non-essential, or even “big” things bother you. Remind yourself of these grateful feelings you have toward your loved ones first thing every morning and every evening as you drift off to sleep. It’s impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time.
